Non Projects is a record label dedicated to the support and discovery of Los Angeles' most innovative artists and composers. Mislaid within an ever-changing and confused recording landscape, Non Projects offers imaginative works of art and sound.

With the aim to showcase each artist's devotion to their love of music and the joy of uncovering hidden and undiscovered sounds and resonances, each release is available with supplemental materials providing a commonly forgotten tangible experience no longer associated with acquiring music.

The Photo Koto

The Photo Koto is a musical instrument that plays the sounds of a city. Resembling the Japanese koto, the instrument has 48 photo sensors that are mounted in along its length. Each one triggers a different sound, collected in Los Angeles along the path of the Metro Red line. The sounds are arranged spatially along the instrument.

With each sample, the small scale beauty scattered through Los Angeles is simultaneously collected and revealed, and when played and combined, new soundscapes emerge. The piece was recently on display at the 2009 Design | Media Arts undergraduate exhibition.
